Why Do Car Headliners Sag?
Car headliners sag when the adhesive and foam backing that hold the fabric to the roof panel break down over time.
A typical headliner is made of fabric bonded to a thin foam layer, which is attached to a rigid board. Heat, moisture, and age cause these materials to fail, allowing the fabric to droop.
Main Causes

Heat and UV exposure — Interior temperatures often exceed 60°C, softening adhesives and degrading the foam.

Foam breakdown — The foam dries out, becomes brittle or powdery, and can no longer support the fabric.

Adhesive failure — Factory glue loses its bond after years of temperature swings.

Moisture and humidity — Leaks or condensation soak the foam and weaken the glue.

Age and wear — Vibration, roof flexing, and lower-quality materials accelerate the process, especially in vehicles 10+ years old.

These factors frequently combine, making sagging a common issue in older cars, particularly those exposed to hot or humid climates.
Why Do Driver Seat Bolsters Sag or Flatten and cover rips or tears?
Driver seat bolsters (the raised side supports on the seat cushion and backrest) lose shape and support over time because the foam compresses and breaks down from repeated pressure and friction—especially on the driver’s side.
Unlike passenger seats, the driver’s bolsters endure constant sliding, body weight, and movement every time someone gets in or out of the vehicle.
Main Causes

Repeated entry and exit — Sliding across or sitting on the outer bolster crushes the foam hundreds or thousands of times, permanently flattening it (“pancaking”).

Foam compression and breakdown — The foam loses its resilience and structure under sustained pressure, so the bolster no longer provides support even if the cover looks intact.

Friction from clothing — Jeans, belts, rivets, and jackets abrade the upholstery and transfer force into the foam underneath.

Heat, UV, and material aging — High cabin temperatures and sunlight dry out leather or vinyl covers and accelerate foam degradation.

Higher usage on the driver’s side — The passenger seat experiences far less of this wear, which is why the driver’s bolsters usually fail first.

The metal frame underneath gets exposed and starts rubbing against the seat cover making small cuts and tears.

Heat caused buy seating causes the vinyl, cloth and leather seat cover to peal, rip and tear as it stretches due to the heat
These factors often combine, making bolster sagging wear and tear a common issue in higher-mileage vehicles or cars with firm, aggressive seat designs and high height cabins as the seats are higher and you have to slide down when getting out.
